Bloody Mary the urban legend

Bloody Mary

Now, this is one of the urban legends that creeps me out the most. When I was a kid in junior school, the other kids would go into the bathroom and turn off the lights supposedly this would be how you would summon Mary, you would then chant her name three or more times in front of a mirror and she would appear. Now whenever I would go in after the kids once they had done the ritual I would always feel like there was something either watching me or was there. Like The kids had disturbed a restless spirit. Now I've always believed in ghosts and I've never really was paranoid untill I heard about this story and what she would do to you if you did chant her name.
She was known for:
-ripping out eyes and scarring your face
- being found dead with claw marks over your body.
-going insane or drop dead on the spot
- lastly, mysteriously disappearing and being dragged into the mirror for all eternity.

Now I don't know if any of these are true but who knows.
The history of the chanting game is based on mixed up legends and history, which has made it the main basis of this urban legend. (I will talk more about the chanting games in another post)
The most well known story that is told by people around the world is that Mary was a witch and came to her untimely death over a 100 years ago because she was found out for being part of the black arts.
However the name Mary Worth has come up a few times over the years and people believe that this name may have been from a women who again was a witch and was executed during the Salem witch trials.
Than again there is a more modern story which is a women was in a bad car accident and before she died people saw she was covered in scars.

Mary Worth
People believe that Mary Worth was a witch from the civil war era (1863–1877) who lived in Chicago. People believed she used to kidnapp runaway slaves and chain them up in her basement.  she would than use them in her diabolical black magic rituals. People believe that the locals took it into there own hands and turned what she did to them onto her and burned her at the stake for witchcraft. Supposedly she was burnt at the stake in St Patricks cemetery.

Mary Tudor
It's commonly known by people that the names Mary Worth and Bloody Mary are a mix of names/characters from history. Mary I queen of England or Mary Tudor reined during the Tudor period (1445-1603) and was also named Bloody Mary.
Bloody Mary was Catholic she was given her name after she ordered countless executions to the protestants of England, she was also well known for sending numerous women/people to the stake to be burnt for Hersey during her 5 year rein. She is also well known for not being able to have children which is why while people chant her name she is commonly known for saying when being seen in the mirror that she will say "I stole your baby" sometimes more then once but again this has just been tangled up in the legend and there is no way to prove this.
There are many story's and names that may be linked to where the origin of  this urban legend came from some of the names include:

Mary whales
A young women who got ran over by a truck and killed while she was stood on a street corner waiting to cross the road. People believe for her to appear you chant "I believe in you, Mary whales"

Mary Worthington
People believe Mary Worthington was young girl from the 1960s who was very vain and lived to look at herself in the mirror because she knew she was beautiful however she went out one day and was involved in a terrible car accident which mangled and scarred her face. People couldn't stand to look at her as they believed she was cursed one day while looking in the mirror she decided she couldn't stand it anymore and committed suicide.

Elizabeth Bathory

Another legend that has some how become part of this urban legend/folklore it is believed my many a women named Elizabeth Bathory she lived in Slovakia 1560-1614 she wa also commonly know as the Countess of cloud and countess Dracula. She is known for torturing young girls so she could bathe in there blood. She believed by bathing in young girls blood it would preserve her beauty. She is known to have killed 600 or more victims. He torturing equipment and methods include using hot red pokers, ice cold water, drowning, an iron maiden, pins and all different types of sharp blades. However her crimes were eventually exposed this happened one day when one of the kings men smelled a horrible odour coming from Elizabeth's room, he went into find the decomposing body's of the dead girls she had tortured for her own gain. She was taken to her castle in Slovakia and walled in until she died of starvation and dehydration. Although her name isn't Mary it's one of the cruellest legends that has managed to entwined itself into the bloody Mary folklore.

Mary weatherby
Mary weatherby was a women who got stabbed by her husband, before she died she was able to write in her own name part of the murderer name. However one suspect was questioned but the charges were dropped as there was not enough evidence to prosecute this person.

Mary Johnson
Mary Johnson was believed to be a witch and was exicuted during the Salem witch trials. To summon her you are supposed to sit in a circle with a group of people and chant her name and what will happen would be a light would appear above one of the groups members heads.

Mary Lou
Mary lou was believed to be a young girl who went to senior prom in USA around the 1950s she was crowned prom queen and after this someone decided to play a trick with firecrackers and her dress was caught on fire she died from being burnt alive. It's is believed by many the reason why so many children enjoy doing the chants as it was a young women who died.

There are many urban legends which also could link to the origin of bloody Mary here are some of them:

Hell Mary
Hell Mary was an urban legend which started centuries ago. People believed that when you turn off the lights and chant her name three times blood would drip down from the mirror and show Satan's face.

Savarta Madam
Savanta is a Swedish legend based on the same thing, stand in Front of the mirror with the lights off and chant "I don't believe you exist Savarta madam" it is believed when she appears she's has been seen with black skin, yellow eyes,  green hair and red teeth almost like a demon.
Queen of spades. (Damia Pika)
The queen of spades is the Russian version of bloody Mary.

Veronica
The Spanish version of bloody Mary.

kuchisake-onna
The Japanese version of bloody Mary, she has been seen with long black hair, green eyes, pure white teeth and a big slit mouth (sounds almost similar to Jane/Jeff the killer doesn't it, another tale I will tell on another blog post)

Candy man

The candy man was also supposedly inspired by Bloody Mary.

I hope you've enjoyed reading this post, however if you decide to try any of these urban legends/chant games out. I want nothing to do with it! Aha until the next one have a good Sunday everyone.
